December 4 – Wonder. How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?

How does one cultivate a sense of wonder, really? In my experience, some things that you think will be wondrous end up not mattering, and sometimes every day things are wondrous.

I could say that I saw more of the world. I mean, I literally saw one of the wonders of the ancient world. But seeing amazing things and being amazed isn’t really an accomplishment.

The pyramids at Giza

What I tried to do this year was to keep in mind a line from a Kate Miller Heidke song that struck me in particular when I was miserable at the beginning of my time in England (technically more than a year ago, but I’m still counting it).

And on those days when she is looking around her
She’s so amazed by the things that she sees
But most days she only sees herself

-Four Spare Seats

I tried to see wonder in the every day. It certainly doesn’t always work, but it’s definitely worth the effort. More than anything, I want to find happiness no matter where I am in life.

That is a challenge, huh? But worth it, if we try (it’s something I’m working on too)

There have definitely been times when I’ve been unable to see around myself, but the wonder is so much better. I’m going to have to listen to that song, I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it.
